LIVE DEMONSTRATIONS OF LATEST GENERATION MATER-BI BIOPLASTICS AT K 2016 WITH MOBERT

Increasingly strong environmental performance and extraordinary mechanical and technical characteristics of solutions made using the latest generation of the Novamont bioplastics range

Thanks to the collaboration with Mobert (Hall 3 E16), visitors can watch a live demonstration of the production of bags for fruit and vegetables - compliant with French legislation - made with different grades of MATER-BI

Novara – Düsseldorf, 19 October 2016 – It is once again time for K, the world's premier fair for the plastics and rubber industry, which takes place every three years in Düsseldorf. The 2016 edition will see Novamont demonstrating maximum competitiveness, presenting a range of solutions made from MATER-BI, themarket-leading biodegradable and compostable bioplastic. The fair will mark the debut of products made with the fourth generation of MATER-BI, which combines the two established technologies of complexed starches and polyesters from oils as well as azelaic and pelargonic acids and sugars transformed through fermentation into bio-butanediol. These solutions contain an even higher proportion of renewable raw materials and an even lower level of greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil feedstock and can be used in a wide range of applications, including flexible and rigid films, coatings, printing, extrusion and thermoforming.

The range of MATER-BI bioplastics can optimise the use of resources and minimise environmental risks associated with end-of-life, while also meeting the following requirements:

  • a C14 renewability percentage of over 50%;
  • cradle-to-grave greenhouse emissions per kilo of product at least 54% lower than those for traditional plastics;
  • recyclability according to the standards of national recycling consortia;
  • compliance with standards for marine biodegradation;
  • composting biodegradability in accordance with standard EN 13432;
  • sustainable biomass used in production.

Among the MATER-BI solutions on display at the Novamont stand at K 2016 (HALL 6 A58) are:
  • disposable carrier bags for shopping
  • bags for separate collection of organic waste
  • coffee capsules
  • cutlery and tableware for serving meals and beverages
  • agricultural mulching film
  • film for wrapping food.

These products can be collected together with organic waste and sent for composting in accordance with legislation in force in various European countries and consistent with the European directive on the reduction of packaging and waste production.
Visitors to K will have the exclusive opportunity to watch a live demonstration of the production of bags for fruit and vegetables made with the latest grades of MATER-BI at the stand of Mobert, a leading Italian manufacturer of heat sealers for plastic film, which will present a new high-efficiency bag production line (www.mobert.it). The demos, which will take place throughout the day, will be of particular interest to companies operating on the French market since the bags for fruit and vegetables made on Mobert heat sealers using the most recent grades of MATER-BI are compliant with recent French legislation on energy transition aimed at limiting the consumption of disposable plastic bags. According to Alessandro Ferlito, Novamont's Commercial Director, "The range of MATER-BI bioplastics represents a unique opportunity for operators who are aware that providing environmentally sustainable solutions will increase their competitive advantage, while also helping develop a bioeconomy which is increasingly capable of generating economic growth with highly innovative social and cultural impacts".
