Symba
Securing Local Supply Chains via the Development of New Methods to Assess the Circularity and Symbiosis of the Bio-based Industrial Ecosystem
The SYMBA project, funded by the European Union, aims to develop a methodology to assess the level of circularity and industrial symbiosis within bio-based systems.
Building on the analysis and improvement of existing methods, SYMBA is designing a holistic framework supported by digital tools and AI-based solutions. This approach is intended to guide regional and local ecosystems in their transition from linear to circular models. By integrating advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence, SYMBA ensures that the proposed solutions are both scalable and adaptable, setting new standards for innovation in the bio-based sector.
The project brings together a consortium of 9 partners from 5 European countries (Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany), each contributing complementary expertise: 4 research and technology organizations (CIRCE, CENTEXBEL, AIMPLAS, CETAQUA), 1 large industry (Novamont), 1 pilot plant (Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant), 1 innovative SME (ENCO), and 2 networks (EIT Climate-KIC and ICLEI). The shared goal is to support the transition toward a circular economy by offering bio-based solutions with low environmental impact on soil, water, and air.
As a project partner, Novamont plays a multifaceted role, contributing to the development and implementation of the Industrial Symbiosis (IS) approach and providing valuable input to enhance the effectiveness and adaptability of the SYMBA methodologies. Novamont also acts as a facilitator of connections across the value chain, promoting knowledge sharing and synergy building among stakeholders.
The project has a duration of 36 months and started on January 1, 2024.
